Santa Cruz SPCA

I was an animal control officer when Chili (then a nameless, shivering wreck) came in to the Santa Cruz SPCA. She sat hunched in the back of her cage snarling and barking defensively at all who walked by. Not a very promising way to find herself a new home, but when removed from her cage she became much calmer. Seemed like it might be worth taking a chance on her. Her markings reminded me of my friend K.T.'s dog Emmie. Even though I knew I shouldn't, I couldn't resist calling K.T. and telling her to just stop by and see the dog - even though I knew perfectly well K.T. was not a person who could "just stop by and see" a dog in need of her help, especially a terrified tri-color border collie mix. Chili went home with K.T. on March 4, 1994 at 1:35 p.m. - much to the consternation of K.T.'s partner at the time - and went on to cause much trouble and happiness for the next 3,812 days. K.T. passed away on September 17, 2004, not long after Chili. You can read more about her on our website at http://www.sheltermedicine.com/about/programs.shtml#top1. Kate
