It didn’t make the headlines, but a blue merle pup snuck through Oliver North’s infamous home security system back when Ollie was a household name. A beer will buy you the full story but suffice it to say she wound up at the Washington DC Humane Society. I had just returned from a stint in the Peace Corps and was helping to set up a low cost spay/neuter clinic for the Society when we met. I named her Hula. She had been in the shelter 2 days. In our time together we spent 2498 hours playing ultimate frisbee, ran 1246 miles on trails in 8 different states, fetched 1,378,733 sticks thrown into various bodies of water, spent 18,512 hours at work, survived 1 residency, moved 7 times, including 2 years in a crooked little trailer in the middle of a cow pasture, jumped into the back of the truck 10,942 times, drove 134,114 miles and thoroughly dug each other for 3771 days. More math: The average life expectancy for a person and dog in North America is 70 and 10 respectively. So, if we're lucky, we have 7 dog eras to see us through a life. Hula saw me through 10 years. It is never long enough is it? I read somewhere that life is short...but wide. Well then, thank you Hula for giving me a double wide.
